Mystery Solved

Lost_recipes_2

This afternoon, I was wandering through Barnes & Noble trying to chill - which I'm lousy at, but I tried anyway. I stopped by a display of new cookbooks. Now, its common knowledge that I am no cook. I leave this arena to Paula Deen and Giada DeLaurentis and other culinary marvels (most of whom have new cookbooks out this fall.)

One book caught my eye - America's Best Lost Recipes. For years, I've been looking for a certain mystery cake my mom used to talk about - a chocolate cake made with ice water that my grandmother made from time to time. Mom didn't have the recipe and couldn't remember the name. She just remembered you scooped 3 holes in the dry ingredients and added ice water right before mixing. Mom passed away in 1985, and I've been looking for that cake ever since. On a whim, I opened the book and started browsing the cake section.

Low and behold, I found it. It's called Wacky Cake and it was introduced in 1949 when eggs, milk and butter were in short supply because of the war. Chances are, I'll never actually make a Wacky Cake; I've only fired up my oven twice this year. I'm just happy to have this little mystery solved.

Thursday Thirteen - Week 36

Sandra10_2

Mitch surprised me this week with a book he found on ebay - one from my childhood wish list. A while back he noticed that I talked about these books, all but 2 of which went as garage sale fodder when we moved to Missouri. Sweet guy that he is, he decided to rebuild my collection. Here is a partial list of my favorite gradeschool reads. To make this list, I had to read the book at least 5 times. I'm sure you'll notice a theme! Thanks to Samulli for the fabulous header.

13 Favorite Childhood Books

El_blanco

1. El Blanco - my newest gift from Mitch.

Flip

2. Flip by Wesley Dennis. I adored this book when I was small.

Big_book_of_horses_2

3. The Big Book of Horses - written and illustrated by Chevy Chase's grandfather.

Misty

4. Misty of Chincoteague - I wanted to BE Marguerite Henry when I was small.

Black_beauty

5. Black Beauty - I still hate it that Ginger died. I have several editions of Black Beauty, including one written entirely in one syllable words. Thanks, Mitch!

Ndrew

6. I read a few Nancy Drew books. The Hidden Staircase was one of my favorites.

Star

7. Star of Wild Horse Canyon. I know the cover art isn't much to look at, but I did like the story.

Album_of_horses

8. The Album of Horses again by the team of Henry and Dennis. Gorgeous full page color illustrations made this book grand.

Bigblackhorse

9. Big Black Horse by Walter Farley. This was my favorite in the series.

Fiveoclockcharlie

10. Five O'Clock Charlie - I really liked this story of a retired horse.

Big_book_of_favorite_horse_stories

11. I loved all the stories in this collection EXCEPT The Red Pony. What was Steinbeck thinking? I hated the movie, too!

Kingofthewind

12. King of the Wind - another Henry/Dennis masterpiece. I have an earlier hardcover edition of this one, too.

Robin_kane

13. The Mystery of the Blue Pelican. I remember thinking this book was soooo sophisticated because the characters lived in California, got to be in a movie AND had a pool party! lol

Let me know what made YOUR childhood book list!

A Halloween Tale

Oldcard114My first Halloween memory is a bad one.

Back in the day before product licensing allowed kids to become their favorite characters in realistic detail, we did not have cute Halloween costumes.  For those born after 1980, this was during the Mesozoic era.  Back then, everyone selected from about a dozen generic Halloween costumes. If you had a creative mom, she added her own original touches that made you stand out from your friends.

When I was in Kindergarten, Mom thought I would make a cute Halloween bunny. I don't know why.  It was raining Halloween morning, but I climbed into my cheap fuzzy rabbit suit and put on the stiff plastic mask. In those days the masks were always too small for a child's face and only had 2 tiny air holes.

Before I left the house, Mom decided I looked like an anorexic bunny, and stuffed the front of my suit with 3 standard bed pillows.  Mind you, I was 5 years old.  By the time she finished, I was late for school.  I ran the block and a half in the rain... unable to breath through the 2 tiny air holes... and with 3 pillows weighing me down.  I crossed the street to the school grounds, tripped on the curb and fell flat on my face.

Problem - I was stuffed with so many pillows, I could not get up.  I just rocked back and forth. I rocked forward until may hands touched the ground, then rocked back until my toes touched, but I couldn't get my hands and feet on the ground at the same time.  The 6th Grader who was serving as Crossing Guard that morning laughed until he got a pain in his side.  Then he helped me up and took my to my class.  By then I was bawling.

Oldcard19_1My ancient teacher, Mrs. Sheehan, who was rumored to have come over on the Mayflower, dried me off with some smelly brown paper towels. Then it was time for the Halloween Parade. I had no idea what this entailed until it was too late.

The Kindergarteners were taken to every class - 1st through 8th grade - so the older students could see how cute we were.  This was some sort of twisted school tradition. That morning, we started with the 8th graders.  As we walked up the aisle between desks, my pillows shifted and I got stuck.

The "helpful" 8th graders shoved me from desk to desk until I reached the front of the room. Mrs. Sheehan removed 2 of my pillows and carried them for me. She was a trooper.

It was a very long, very emotional day, that Halloween. Mom was waiting for me after school, so excited to hear about my fun-filled day.  What she got was an earful from little me!  I was so exhausted I skipped trick-or-treating that night. There was no way I was leaving the house in that stupid rabbit suit again!  I never cared for the holiday after that.  But in the ensuing years, I was always kind to the Kindergarteners when they came to our classroom for the annual Halloween Parade.

DK and Stray Kitty

Okay, I've been threatening to "share" some of our old family pictures on this blog since the end of August.  I'll bet you thought I forgot all about it; I didn't.  So, smile politely and humor me.  Here goes...

Debbie_and_stray_kitty_2

This is me - I'm about 3 here - with a neighborhood stray.  As you can see, I'm thrilled the cat stopped by my house.  Mom put some milk out for it. I'm sure I wanted to pet it, but I break out in hives if I touch a cat, so this is as close as I dare get.  It's not a very good picture - it's torn and has water spots, but it's one of my favorites.

Another Week Begins

Happy Monday to you all!  This begins my 3rd Official Week of Blogging and since I haven't received an angry memo from the Typepad people telling me I'm too dumb to use their platform, I'm feeling pretty good.

Thanks for all the terrific comments.  The post generating the most feedback was my very first Thursday Thirteen list.  Five of you actually told me that you copied books word for word when you were little, too.  I guess we weren't weird kids after all; we're okay!

My next blog project:  My brother, David, gave me a box filled with old family slides.  Dad's second wife was cleaning out the closets and gave him a call. Yes, I said slides, not picturesNote to all you young bloggers: slides were popular back in the day when dinosaurs roamed North America.  This pre-dates the Polaroid Instamatic Camera.

Yes, my dad took slides, not pictures like everyone else.  The only way to properly view these things was with a clunky old projector and a big screen, and who wants to sit through that?!  Dad died a year and a half ago (we weren't close) and my mom passed away in 1985, so I haven't seen these things in more than 20 years.  They're a hoot!

My wonderful hubby, Mitch, got an attachment for our digital camera that will allow me to download and post these antiques right here on my blog!  Okay, I see you rolling your eyes and going, Gee, I think I'm late for that root canal appointment.  Don't worry.  I'll only post the truly noteworthy pics... the ones that tell a story.  I'll spare you from all the old shots Dad took of other people's cars.  What was he thinking?
