Time To Build an Ark

348656391_b44caf0ffaI know, water is not supposed to cover the earth ever again. However, its been raining here since Friday night. This follows the foot of rain we got two weeks ago. The ground is saturated - like a big soppy sponge. As I sit here writing this post, I have one eye glued to the TV because the 6 counties just west of us are under tornado warnings. That's warning not watch - and it's headed our way. You know, we've had a string of "Bad Weather Mondays" since mid-January. This is the 3rd time we've had tornado outbreaks to start the week. I'm beginning to feel like we're in some sort of Time Warp Loop Thingie. (I know there's a technical Star Trekkie term for that phenomenon, but I don't know it.) Just thought I'd touch base in case we all float away later today. So, is it dry where you are?

Thursday Thirteen - Week 42

Tt_pinkgerber

Welcome 13ers! It has been months since my last TT - August 29th to be exact. So I thought it would be a great time to jump back in, touch base with some old friends and make some new ones. This is what's been going on with me since my last list.

13 Things DK's Been Doing

1. Where to start... Well, back in August I was still recovering from 2 major surgeries. I'm all mended now and feeling pretty darned good... except for one thing -

2. I was injured in the hospital by 2 nurses. In September, my surgeon sent me to therapy because my neurologist dropped the ball.

3. I went through two and a half months of therapy for my hand and arm. I also started seeing a brand new neurologist that I like very much. Therapy ended up making the injury worse, so that stopped abruptly just before Thanksgiving.

4. After months of therapy and evaluation, it has been determined that the nerve injuries I received are permanent. We are now dealing with the hospital's insurance company.

5. The holidays came and went. Busy. Great. Not as overwhelming as I thought.

6. The character blogs I write keep growing. To date, they have seen more than 750,000 visitors in a little over a year. (For those of you who don't know me, I work for a family entertainment company in NY. Keeps me very very busy.)

7. My hubby and I also have a small publishing company. I finished the final edit on a fiction series I'm writing and began work on the book's layout. I decided I want something different; I want this series heavily illustrated.

8. After the holidays, we began looking for a book printer for this project, fully aware that we're likely to end up in China.

9. The winter weather turned wild - 2 tornado outbreaks, 4 ice "events" and 1 major flood since mid-January. Consequently, I haven't been able to hit the walking trails much this winter. I'm up to 3 - 4 miles a day and I really miss it.

10. Mitch began looking for a recumbent bike for me - a sports model, not a geezer-mobile - since I can no longer ride my bike (Just one of the adjustments I'm making as a result of the nerve damage.)

11. A few weeks ago I began blogging regularly again. I changed my header and took a few new head shots. (The new one's on my other blog. See #13)

12. I've had lots of interest in my fiction series, but the illustration process is going to be lengthy. So, I decided to introduce it online, using a "character-written" blog. Yes, 2 of the main characters in my new series now have their very own blog. It's gonna be fun.

13. The blog is called Pages from Paddlebrook. It's about 2 weeks old and its already had several hundred visitors. I invite you to drop by and meet Sammy and Sheila. I think you'll like them!

That's it - my 13 items are used up and I barely scratched the surface! Oh well, there's always next week. Happy TTing! Thanks to Yellow Rose for the gorgeous spring header.

It's Tax Time

TaxesI've thought about this and I believe its no coincidence that Cedar Season and Tax Season come at the same time every year. It's sorta like getting all the unpleasant stuff over with at once. On April 15th, another tax deadline will be history and so will the cedar pollen. (If the trees aren't done by then, they will be shortly.) Yesterday, I dug out all my 2007 receipts and started making deduction stacks, one for each catagory. My dining room is now decorated in Post-it Notes and piles of paper, so much paper that I'm afraid to light my Wolfard Lamps. I'm not hurrying through this maze. I only work on it when the allergy drugs make me feel sub-human. Do I worry about my math when I'm in this Cro-Magnon state? Nope. Mitch built a spreadsheet for the whole mess. So, how's tax season goin' at your house?

Bump in the Road

Dog_in_car_seatI've hit that annual rough patch known to allergy sufferers as Cedar Season. Actually its been going on in Texas since November and on days when the wind comes from the south, we get their pollen. Now however, our own shaggy Eastern Cedars have joined the party. Last week they hit me like a ton of bricks. I take 5 perscription drugs for cedar allergy and the asthma that comes with it, so here lately I've been feeling like the pup in this picture. Needless to say, my creative pilot light is on low. Heck, I'm doing good to remember what day of the week it is. The wretched cedars have run me right off my walking trail; I'm taking refuge indoors, with 2 air purifiers running in hyperdrive. Mitch isn't phased by cedars (good for him; bummer for me) So, today while he bicycled 18 miles, I went to a nearby Borders, drank a pot of Earl Gray and wrote. It was kinda fun... but I'd rather be on the trail. Only a few more weeks.

Attention: Parents

Kidzui_2My boss gave me a heads up on this, so I thought I'd pass it along. A new company called KidZui is launching today. It describes itself as a revolutionary new web browser specifically for kids ages 3 - 12. KidZui currently offers more than 500,000 kid-friendly websites, pictures and videos, and they add new content daily. All content has been reviewed and accepted by a member of the KidZui team, which is comprised of parents and educators. My friend & co-worker Patty Anne has been exploring the site for the past couple of hours. Patty taught school herself for several years, and is the moderator for a well-known family-friendly website, so security and kid-friendly are right up her alley. She's already signed up for KidZui's trial offer and the girl doesn't impress easily, so I'll take that as an endorsement. If you have kidlets at home, you might want to check this out. LMK what you think!

Happy Birthday

Early last week I mentioned that we had 4 birthdays to celebrate. Yesterday, was my SIL Vickie's Bday - notice I'm not telling you how old she is ;) And my nephew, Nick, will turn another year older and wiser on Tuesday. We met our family for an Easter/Birthday lunch yesterday and Mitch snapped some pics.
