Red Friday - December 28

Soldierchristmas

"A Soldier's Christmas"
Written by Captain Michael Marks
December 7th, 2000

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
my daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree, I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep
in perfect contentment, or so it would seem.
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eye when it tickled my ear.

Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble le, I struggled to hear,
and I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear
" Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts,
to the window that danced with a warm fire's light
then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night"

"Its my duty to stand at the front of the line,
that separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"
then he sighed, "that's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers,"
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red white and blue ... an American flag.

"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home,
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat,
I can carry the weight of killing another
or lay down my life with my sisters and brothers
who stand at the front against any and all,
to insure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right,"
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
" Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
" Just tell us you love us, and never forget
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone.
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
to know you remember we fought and we bled
is payment enough, and with that we will trust.
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.

Whew!

Nau_switchboardOkay, I know that if I were a GOOD blogger, I would have dropped by all my favorite sites and sent bunches of cheery Christmas wishes to all my bloggy friends for the best holiday ever. Didn't happen. As you know, I was sick the week before Christmas, and had 4 functions to attend, presents to wrap, pies to bake, blah blah blah.

I also covered for my good friend and co-worker, Pat, over Christmas. She runs all the websites for the entertainment company I work for. She was hoping to take a few days off with her family, so I volunteered to moderate the blogs - all nine of them. We're talking hundreds of comments that must be read, edited, or rejected if they don't make muster with the family-oriented code this company adheres to. You also must report spam, answer questions and put a halt to flame wars - did I mention we have an international following? Yeah, we do, so there's the culture curve to deal with, too. After that, all traceable info must be removed before comments can be published. Yes, it's very much like the picture above.

Pat returns home tonight - Yippee! That means tomorrow I turn in my online moderator hat and go back to doing what I do best - writing content. Ahh, peace...

What Is Christmas?

Vicchii4

"Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas."

Christmas Gift Idea

51vf0jflkyl__ss400__2

So I went Christmas shopping last week and ended up buying a great little book for me. I know a bunch of you either are dog lovers or know one, so I thought I'd mention this book. It's called simply, Dogs.  Written by Catherine Johnson and published by Phaidon, this is a visual gem for dog people everywhere. It's filled with vintage photographs of dogs, with or without their owners. I found my copy at Borders - it lists for $14.95 - but you can buy it at Barnes & Noble or Amazon, too. They all offer discounts. That's my Christmas pick for this season!

What A Week!

Christmasornaments1It's been a rocky week, but it's starting to look up. I spent all of last weekend sick - as in unable-to-stand-up-without-hitting-the-floor sick. Who has time for that? And I've been trying to cram 2 weeks worth of writing into 4 days this week - while feeling punky - and wrap up all the Christmas prep, too. Today, I'm feeling much stronger, just a bit run down. Now that things are settling down, I should be able to get back to my little blog. I hope YOUR week has gone better than mine!

Need To Relax? Me Too.

Fireplace1Okay, enough is enough. Now the weather dude is calling for snow - and lots of it - starting tomorrow night. It's been almost 3 weeks since I've been able to take a good walk in the park. We've had rain, ice, drizzle, ice fog, flooding, and creepy cold. Now snow. Grrrr....

Moving on. Mitch got an email tonight from our friend Cathy. She sent him a link to a new e-store owned by one of their old school friends. Of course, I had to go check it out. I'm impressed. It's called Digital Aquariums, and it has a wonderful selection of beautiful DVDs designed with one purpose - to get you to relax. I'm thinkin' I need about a gross of these things. LOL  Seriously, go check it out. I'll bet you know someone who would be thrilled to find one of these DVDs under the tree this Christmas.

Rain Rain, Go Away

Decicebybrucejames_2

This makes 6 days, or maybe 7 - I've lost count - of straight rain. We're wearing water wings here. You know what this means - no walking. No biking. No sun. Yuk! Thankfully, we haven't had ice at all... yet. The weather dudes issued another ice storm advisory for today though. I think we've had 5 storm advisories in the last week. We have another 36 hours of this mess to look forward to before we start to dry out. Sixty miles north of us, the National Guard has been called in to help. Those folks have been hit very hard with freezing rain, and it looks like it may be days before they get the power back on. I still have lots of Christmas prep and writing to do to keep me occupied, but all these days spent indoors are putting me on edge. Too bad I don't drink! I'll let you know when the sun comes out. Stay tuned...

Are You One of Them?

Hooker_dolltm So I'm standing in line at TJ Maxx the other day - I went in there to buy Christmas gift bags. I never use gift bags; I'm old school. I wrap gifts and then make bows. But since my left hand is seriously compromised this Christmas, bow-making is a real challenge. I know this sounds like an insignificant thing, but it has really upset me this year. So, I listened to Mitch and reluctantly bought some bags.

In my family, I have a reputation for making pretty packages. Some people are known for baking fabulous desserts (we all know that's not me) and some people are known for giving really thoughtful gifts. What sort of gift-giving reputation do you have? LMK

Back to TJ Maxx. In line in front of me were two women. Kinda large. 60-ish. Had never seen a gym. And dressed garishly, oh yeah. One looked a lot like the doll pictured above. The other one was wearing a pink Adidas running suit - and black patent leather heels. I kid you not. They were Christmas shopping. They had 2 carts filled to the top with the most horrible stuff in the store. We're talkin' white elephant fodder. You know how you go through retail stores, see really ugly stuff and go, "who buys this junk?" Well, I found them; last Friday evening they were shopping in TJ Maxx. As I was standing there trying not to stare open-mouthed, I thought about their poor families on Christmas morning. They have this sort of thing to look forward to every year.

I guess "settling" for using gift bags this Christmas isn't so bad after all.

Whitney's Art

Stellarjaycopy_2

Copyright 2007 Whitney Hartman

Last night I told you about a painting my 19 year old niece, Whitney, did because she knew I was looking for bird artwork to add to my new book-in-progress. She did this in a day. A day. Can you believe it? This is a Stellar's Jay and I absolutely love it... and doesn't it look great with all the blue on my blog? It's definitely going in the book. Yessir, it is! I thought this might just perk up everyone's Monday. It's rainy/icy here.

Thank you, Whitney!
