Thursday Thirteen - Week 33
Last week Impworks had a great TT, listing 13 birds he might see on his walk to work. I loved the idea, so this week, I'm posting 13 birds that live around our house. Thanks to Yellow Rose for the gorgeous banner!
1. Eastern Bluebird. Gotta start with this one; it's our state bird. A pair of these likes to perch on top our courtyard fence.
2. Ruby-throated Hummingbird. I didn't put feeders out this year because I just couldn't keep up with filling them daily, but that hasn't kept them away. They buzz around my garden every day; they love Zebrina hollyhocks!
3. This is a Pileated Woodpecker. They are very large, very shy birds. A pair of these lives in the woods behind our house. I see them every couple of months or so. They're awesome to watch!
4. Red headed woodpecker. Not as large as the Pileated, but they always catch your eye when they swoop through the yard.
5. Carolina wren. One of these lives around our house. They are anti-social birds and do not work and play well with others, but I really like them!
6. Northern Cardinal. We have lots of these in our yard.
7. American goldfinch. I keep a thistleseed feeder outside my office window and it's always busy with these gorgeous little birds!
8. Greater Roadrunner. One of these guys lives across the road and frequently darts over to our yard. I've seen him snatch a snake or lizard and take it home for dinner more than once!
9. Indigo Bunting. A rare and tiny visitor. The backs of these little birds are bluish-black. They are absolutely gorgeous.
10. Black-capped Chickadee. One of the most common visitors to our yard. They're just so cheery to watch!
11. Killdeer. An unusual bird because they don't fly much and they make their nests on the ground. We had 3 pair of these last year on our street. Baby killdeer chicks running everywhere!
12. Purple Finch. These pretty little birds compete with the Goldfinches for a spot at the thistleseed feeder.
13. Great Blue Heron. We live on a peninsula with a lake on either side. One of the sites I've never gotten used to is seeing these huge birds flying overhead, their long legs trailing behind them.
The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

Beautiful! We have just started doing some bird watching. We have lots of Cardinals at our feeder and a couple of squirrels. Lately I've been seeing a red bird that I think is some kind of a finch but I'm not sure.

Great pictures. Now I know what some of the birds in the comments on my post last week were that I'd not had time to look up yet. A great selection of birds and what stunning colours too :-)

Great post! I was wondering what type of woodpecker I saw in the woods behind our house...now I know! Pileated woodpecker. Beautiful.
